BACK TO BASICS

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking during our long gloriously hot summer. I’ve realised that some of my previous newsletters may have contained information that was a bit too technical for some of my readers. Sorry if I’ve confused you but I sometimes get a bit carried away and I forget that I’ve been studying the subject of natural health for a few years. What I mean by natural health is trying to prevent illnesses from occurring by keeping your body and mind healthy and also repairing any damage that has occurred, so that existing ailments diminish and might even disappear.

I’ve learned over the past four years or so that your health is your most important asset and this becomes more apparent the older you get. Many people suffer from illnesses that are brought on by eating too much of the wrong types of food and not enough of the right food. We, as a nation, are eating too much refined sugar and processed foods that contain a host of additives to enhance shelf life and appearance. These foods, together with the over-use of pesticides, are responsible for many diseases including cancer, heart disease, allergies and arthritis. So many people are addicted to sugar, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine – all of which are severely damaging our health.

Many people feel as though they have no energy left for living. They feel depleted, worn out, edgy, angry and sad. This is what it feels like to be toxic. When you feel like that, it’s so tempting to console yourself with the wrong kind of food, which is full of fat or sugar. What goes in to your body is supposed to come out, but it’s not always that simple. Many toxins that enter the body don’t leave that quickly and some become lodged in your cells leading to severe health problems. You can’t see these toxins but you can feel them as moods of fatigue, anxiety, illness, anger, depression, headaches, backaches, rashes and raw nerves. They could deprive you of sleep, your stamina and overall your passion for living.

So, do you recognise any of these problems as part of your life? How can we make things better? We pamper ourselves at beauty salons or buy new clothes trying to feel better. These only work on the outside of your body whereas the real issues are on the inside. The whole key to personal transformation starts on a cellular level. We need to clean out our cells and start to feel really good. It’s never too late and a good time to start is at the change of the seasons. I hate to think that summer has finished but the holiday period is more or less over with the kids back at school and everyone’s feeling a bit overweight after eating and drinking too much on holiday and at the summer barbecues. So, if you want to feel better, have more energy or lose weight then I would highly recommend a detox.

I’ll now give you a basic programme, which hopefully will start you off on the right road to feeling much better than you have for a long time.

STEP ONE – DETOX

Start off with a Chinese Tiao He Cleanse. This a ten-day herbal detox that cleanses the liver, kidneys, blood, lymph and colon. It involves taking a packet of encapsulated herbs with breakfast, lunch and dinner. During this detox, drink lots of water and eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Try and cut out caffeine (coffee, tea and chocolate) and reduce the amount of red meat in your meals. This detox will clear out lots of built-up faecal matter from your intestinal system. Most people lose a few pounds in weight during the ten-day programme. Stock no 4000 – price £16.90.

STEP TWO – FOOD DETOX

During your initial detox you hopefully managed to cut out or reduce the amount of caffeine and red meat in your diet. Now is your opportunity to take it a step further. I’m sure many of you will have heard of Carol Vorderman’s book “Detox for life” which is a 28-day detox diet. Carol Vorderman went down two dress sizes without counting calories or feeling hungry. This is the way to stabilise your weight for life and leave behind those crazy diet plans. I know many people have been raving about the Atkins diet. While it clearly allows you to lose weight, I consider that this diet puts too much emphasis on eating meat, which will eventually clog up your colon. One of the main causes of bowel cancer is the undigested toxic material sitting in the intestines. Just think about it for a minute. We need vitamins and minerals for all our bodily functions and processes and these vitamins and minerals come mainly from fresh fruit and vegetables. So we need to eat lots of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis.

Another really excellent detox book is “The 3-Day Energy Fast” by Pamela Serure. This is a 3-day juice fast which explains how to detox both your physical body and your mind. You’ll feel totally rejuvenated! (continued overleaf)

If you can’t face the full blown food detox at this moment in your life, then here are a few diet tips to follow:

·         Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables (organic, if possible).

·         Drink eight 8oz glasses of mineral water every day.

·         Eat more pulses like chickpeas and various types of beans.

·         Try eating brown rice – brown basmati rice is one of the best choices.

·         Reduce the amount of dairy foods in your diet. Goats’ cheese and soya products are good alternatives.

·         Reduce the amount of wheat in your diet such as pasta, bread, pizzas, cakes and biscuits. There are now some very good pastas made from rice and corn by a company called Orgran, available in supermarkets.

·         Reduce the amount of caffeine from tea, coffee, colas and chocolate. Drink more fruit juice and herbal teas.

I explained in my last newsletter about the pH balance of the body and that if your body was too acid many serious health problems could occur. The bottom line is that we should be eating 80% alkaline foods and 20% acid foods for perfect pH balance. Most people eat too much of the acid forming foods such as meat, shellfish, dairy products, bread, pasta, pastries, white rice, coffee, soft drinks and sugar. We need more alkaline foods like fruit and vegetables.

STEP THREE – SUPPLEMENTS

I take vitamin and mineral supplements on a daily basis. This is because so much research has revealed that the mineral and vitamin content of our food is as much as 75% less than it was 50 years ago. A huge percentage of the population are deficient in minerals such as zinc and magnesium, to name just two.

Research has also indicated that aging takes place because of destructive cellular changes brought on by free radicals. These damage the body’s DNA and your system starts to break down. Free radicals come from pollution in the air we breathe, pesticides and chemical fertilisers on and in our food, and chemicals contained in cleaning products, beauty and make-up products.

Your body has antioxidant enzymes that fight these free radicals but if your system becomes overloaded from environmental sources such as smoke, alcohol, pesticides and chemicals, then these natural enzymes are not enough to fight off the damaging free radicals.

There have been numerous studies that have shown the beneficial effects of taking antioxidants that fight these free radicals in the body. Some of the common antioxidants are Vitamin C, E, beta-carotene, zinc, ginkgo biloba, Grapine and milk thistle.

DAILY BASIC SUPPLEMENT PROGRAMME

·         A multi vitamin and mineral such as Super Supplemental (stock no 1817 – price £13.50 for 120 tabs) or Mega Chel (stock no 1821 – price £26.50 for 180 tabs).

·         An antioxidant formula such as the Antioxidant Arsenal (stock no 4033 – price £22.25) or Super Antioxidant (stock no 1825 – price £22.70).

·         Essential fatty acids such as Flax seed Oil (stock no 1770 – price £13.05) or Omega 3 Fish Oil (stock no 1609 – price £11.65).

You might have a specific health problem that could be helped by taking one of the many herbal combinations or single herbs that Nature’s Sunshine excels in producing. So how do you know what to take? Here are some of the options:

·         Contact me to arrange a private health consultation.

·         Refer to the flow charts in the new Product Catalogue for guidance.

·         Ring the company herbalist, Peter Klein, for advice on 01694 781503 on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9am to 1pm.

·         Choose your supplements, skin care, body care and make-up wisely.

I use Nature’s Sunshine products because they are organic, potent and the correct form of minerals and vitamins are used in the products. You may not know this, but products bought in High Street Shops usually use the cheapest form of minerals, which are then poorly absorbed into the body. Their products contain fillers and bulking agents meaning that there is less of the active ingredients. Many of the well-known make-up companies use formaldehyde in their products as a preservative but this is poisonous to our bodies.

Nature’s Sunshine has a superb range of vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies together with natural skin care, body care and hair care products. They also have a full range of make-up products and aromatherapy oils. Ask for a copy of the new catalogue and you’ll be amazed at the range of products available.

STEP FOUR – EXERCISE AND TREATMENTS

You will benefit greatly from any of the following:

·         Regular exercise at least 3 times a week.

·         Yoga/pilates classes.

·         Regular massages to treat stress, muscular pain etc.

·         Daily dry skin brushing.

·         Bathing in essential oils such as Lavender or Roman Chamomile.

So, are you ready to go for it? This is the first day of the rest of your life. What are going to choose? The cream cake or feeling good. If you can’t take it all on board at once, then start with small steps and build on it. There’s no need to rush. Take it slowly and make gradual changes towards a long healthy, pain free life.
