October 1999

By now, most of you will have received your free copy of  Horizons magazine and will have read the brilliant article on parasites! If anyone is thinking of trying the Chinese Para- Cleanse – I know I am! – then you can order it on your USA Order Form. But don’t forget that orders must be received no later than 18 October or else you’ll miss the boat.

I spoke to Peter Klein, the herbalist, to ask him what children could take and he suggested Black Walnut (apparently, parasites hate Black Walnut!). This is a Liquid Extract so very easy for children, and adults, to take and is available on your UK Order Form.

Some of you may not realise that I give talks on health and nutrition, and the importance of supplementation. If you’re interested in attending a talk one evening then give me a call. Or, you could get a few friends together (at least 8 please),  and I will visit your home. I also do these talks at Women’s Groups or WI meetings, so if you are involved with any of these groups and you think they would be interested in my talk, please let me know.

And finally, my sister Lynne now has her own Nature’s Sunshine website (mine will follow soon!). Among the many interesting pages is information particularly on menopausal problems and natural HRT. You can find this information on www.optimumhealth.co.uk. If you don’t have access to the Internet, I shall be including an article on the menopause in November’s issue.

How To Prevent Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, or thinning of the bones, affects a staggering one in three women and one in twelve men during their lifetime. Yet it is largely preventable. Bone is alive. It is a living tissue that’s constantly being renewed. Osteoporosis occurs when the removal of old bone outweighs the laying down of new bone. Our bones can become so thin and fragile that a simple fall may lead to a fractured wrist or ankle, and even bending over may cause a crushed spine! Osteoporosis usually occurs after the menopause when the ovaries stop producing oestrogen – the hormone that plays a crucial part in maintaining bone mass.

So how can we increase the density of our bones and prevent osteoporosis?

  • Try to include in your daily diet foods rich in calcium such as oily fish, dark green vegetables, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, nuts.

  • Cut down on salt and caffeine – too much of either can reduce the amount of calcium that your body converts into strong bones. (Try NSP’s Herbal Beverage as a healthy coffee substitute).

  • Do weight-bearing exercises to keep bones strong: tennis, squash, aerobics, walking, or weight-training.

  • Drink less alcohol since it can reduce the body’s ability to absorb calcium.

  •  Stop smoking since it interferes with bone formation and oestrogen levels.

  • Take a good quality calcium supplement that includes magnesium since each of these minerals depends on the other for proper assimilation in the body.

Nature’s Sunshine Calcium-Magnesium contains all the essential vitamins and minerals for keeping bones strong – Vitamin D (fish oils), phosphorus, zinc, copper and boron.

I take four tablets each day – two with breakfast and two with lunch. The bottle contains 240 tablets so they last me two months.  At just £9.30 a bottle, I think they’re worth it for peace of mind, and helping to prevent the ‘silent epidemic’, osteoporosis.

Your Letters

Many thanks for your letters and testimonials! Here are a just a few of them, but please keep sending them to me together with any questions or comments you may have.

I must write to say what a difference Nature’s Sunshine Products has made to my life. I was so depressed when my GP told me he had no cure for arthritis but to simply take painkillers. So, even though in the past I have been sceptical about the value of complementary medicines, I decided to at least try ART-A (suggested for bone problems) supple-mented by Alfalfa and Evening Primrose Oil. After just a month the difference was remarkable – the stiffness in my fingers and toes no longer troubles me and, best of all, I am now mobile in the mornings! Thank you for all your help – I’m looking forward to your next Newsletter.

For many years I have been unable to use moisturisers or creams on my face because they caused an allergic reaction in my eyes. I have tried many different makes but all of them leave me with bloodshot and sore eyes. Then I tried Nature’s Sunshine Botanical Benefits moisturiser, and much to my surprise I found I could use it without any adverse reaction. Now I won’t use anything else.

I have suffered, and I mean suffered, with sinus problems for more than twenty years. For as long as I can remember I have experienced a running or blocked nose combined with periods of painful blocked sinuses. I tried any and every herbal product available but to no effect. Last year, after a particularly severe attack of sinusitis, I finally went to the doctor who put me on a course of powerful anti-histamines and a steroidal nasal spray. Even though they did the trick, I was concerned  about taking drugs and their possible long-term side-effects. Luckily, someone I knew suggested I try Nature’s Sunshine herbal product ALJ. As a vegetarian, I was pleased to see that they had a vegetarian range which included ALJ as a liquid extract. Much to my relief I am now breathing properly again and free from sinusitis!

Premenstrual Syndrome

Many women experience PMS, with symptoms ranging from head-aches and mood swings, to bloatedness and abdominal cramps. If, like me, you do suffer with PMS then there’s something you can do to alleviate the symptoms. Nutrition plays a major role in whether or not a woman will have PMS. It was interesting to read recently that ‘…the reason we see so much PMS among women in their thirties is because most of them have been pregnant, which has depleted their bodies of nutrients…’.  Here’s what we need to do:

  • Resist the temptation to drink alcohol

  • Cut out refined sugars and carbohydrates

  • Eat whole-grain breads, cereals, and naturally sweet fresh fruits

  • Cut out the caffeine in tea, coffee and Coke

  • Try not to give in to your cravings for chocolate and crisps -sugary and salty foods can aggravate monthly water retention

  • Eat less meat and more vegetables

  • Include the following supplements to help alleviate PMS:

Calcium-Magnesium, Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin E with Selenium, Evening Primrose Oil, FC with Dong Quai (this is good for balancing hormones should you have a problem with irregular periods, like me, but that’s another story!).

Please see your Order Form for Stock Nos. and Prices.
