I’ve just returned from Wales where I had a Nature’s Sunshine Stand at the Natural Health Show with my sister, Judith. We had two wonderful days at the show meeting lots of people of like minds. I did a half hour talk on “Why Supplement” and “Which Supplement” and why detoxing is so vital to achieving and maintaining good health. I thought I’d give you a quick reminder of why The World Health Organisation considers supplementation to be essential. Fifty years ago or so our food was much cleaner and our soil was rich in nutrients. During World War II the government realised that without the imported food the UK farmers were not able to provide enough food to feed the nation. Intensive farming was introduced which resulted in the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.

After 10 years many of the pesticides were withdrawn because it was discovered that they were harmful to people’s health. Different pesticides were introduced but eventually these were also proved to be harmful. The same scenario is constantly repeated as various pesticides are withdrawn and introduced. Individual pesticides are tested and deemed to be okay. BUT consideration is never given to the cocktail effect of the different chemicals used on and in our food.

 

Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, Beta Carotene and Grapine help to counteract the damaging effect of the chemicals on the food.

 

Over the past 50 years there has also been a reduction of minerals in the soil. The 1992 Earth Summit Report highlighted that there has been a 72% loss of minerals in the soils of Europe. Our food is also over processed and refined which destroys vital nutrients such as folic acid, iron, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc and other minerals. Only 3 chemical fertilisers are put back into the soil whereas we should have a supply of the 62 trace minerals.

 

Organic farmers use the traditional methods of farming and leave the fields to rest in order to build up the nutrients in the soil resulting in nutrient rich crops. The same principle applies to supplements and we need organically sourced supplements for the nutritional content.
