Nature’s Sunshine

 MARCH 2003 Newsletter

Issue  35                                                                                                March 2003

At least the worst of the winter is over and the mornings and evenings are now getting lighter. I love this time of year when the garden starts coming to life with snowdrops and crocuses. I recently went to Crete for a week where it was very green after the winter rain. There were small yellow flowers everywhere and the wild orchids were just about to bloom. I’m now looking forward to my next visit in June when I’ll be staying at Yoga Plus, for two weeks of yoga, pilates and meditation.

In February I went to a skin care workshop at Terry Bosshard’s house where Ruby Robinson, a skin care expert, taught us all how to correctly cleanse, tone and moisturise our skin using the Nature’s Sunshine Natria Skin Care Range. There are more workshops available in March and April, the dates for which are listed on the enclosed invitation for those of you who live locally.

I’ve decided to devote this Newsletter to prostate problems and heart disease. Quite a few men have asked for my advice on how to maintain a healthy prostate. There has also been a lot of media attention on heart disease in women.

PROSTATE PROBLEMS

I recently read an article in The Mail on Sunday headed “Men clueless on prostate dangers.” It is necessary to raise awareness of prostate problems for these reasons:

·             1 in 13 men develop prostate cancer.

·             the disease kills more than 9,000 men a year.

·             the number of cases of prostate cancer is expected to rise by 50% over the next 20 years.

·             20,000 men are diagnosed with the disease each year.

There are three conditions that can cause problems with the prostate:

Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate); benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH-enlarged prostate with no signs of cancer); and prostate cancer.

So what can you do to improve your prostate health? It is vital that men go to the doctor at the first sign of any problem, as prostate cancer can only be cured with early intervention. Treatment, however, carries a 90% risk of impotence and a 20% risk of incontinence.

The latest research about preventing prostate problems through supplements, herbs, diet and lifestyle is encouraging. It is a good idea for men to become aware of prostate cancer and begin a prevention programme early in life.

LIFESTYLE ADVICE FOR PROSTATE HEALTH

  • Eat 1 to 4 ounces of pumpkin seeds every day, as these are rich in zinc.
  • Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Eat lots of cooked tomato products as these are rich in lycopene which has been shown to reduce prostate problems
  • Reduce dairy products
  • Eliminate tobacco; alcohol (especially beer and wine); caffeine (especially tea and coffee); spicy food and junk food.
  • Drink 4 to 6 pints of mineral water daily to stimulate urine flow.
  • Get regular exercise such as walking.

CORONARY HEART DISEASE

A new report launched on 11 February 2003 by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) warned that the majority of women in the UK are dangerously unaware of the deadly threat of coronary heart disease (CHD).

Only 1 in 4 women recognise that CHD is the single biggest threat to their life expectancy, while 40% consider cancer the greatest threat. In reality, in 2001 coronary heart disease claimed the lives of over 54,000 women in the UK – more than four times that of breast cancer.

The report emphasised that, contrary to popular belief, heart disease is as much a woman’s problem as a man’s, and urges women to take greater responsibility for their own heart health. At least 1.2 million women are now living with heart disease and this figure is rising. Women of all ages need to be more aware of their hearts and make their hearts their number one health priority.

KEEP YOUR HEART HEALTHY WITH NATURE’S SUNSHINE

It has been identified that a diet high in fish oils, particularly the Omega-3 group, has been shown to help maintain a healthy heart.

Omega-3 supplements are rich in vitamins A and D, as well as essential minerals, including selenium. Scientists quite recently discovered that certain races, particularly Greenland Eskimos, and the Japanese had low incidence of heart disease. These cultures have diets very high in fish, which are high in Omega-3 fatty acids.

Some studies suggest that Vitamin E may have an important role in helping maintain a healthy heart. Vitamin E supplements can help maintain a healthy heart and circulation. As an antioxidant it can help protect the body against the effects of excess free radical damage, and it is also important in the maintenance of healthy skin.

Many studies now confirm that high levels of homocysteine in the body are linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Homocysteine, in high concentrations, can damage cells which line the arteries and lead to arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and heart disease. Levels of homocysteine rise in the blood stream when folic acid levels are low.
