Issue 29                                                                                                 July/August 2002

In this month’s Newsletter I’m going to concentrate on children’s and men’s health. We may have got ourselves sorted out as far as supplementation is concerned and improving our diets, but we mustn’t forget that the lack of nutrients in our food affects everyone. Even children as young as three or four can have severe health problems, which may be helped with herbs and basic good nutrition. We may find we no longer have control of the foods our children eat when they advance to being teenagers. All too often, especially with girls, a desire to be thin changes the way they eat - rushing off to school without breakfast, or skipping school lunches. Children can be under quite a lot of pressure with various types of exams, moving up to secondary school etc., which can make them stressed. And some men are guilty of grabbing a quick sandwich, packet of crisps and a bar of chocolate instead of sitting down to a healthy lunch. As you know, the lack of nutrients may lead to problems later in life, so let’s address our diets now and not worry so much about the future.

You may have heard on the radio or on TV about the risks of HRT. Studies in America show that women on HRT are more likely to develop breast cancer or heart disease. They then followed this news report by saying that women in the UK shouldn’t be worried because this particular type of HRT was not available here. But the risks are still there when taking HRT and if you are worried, or know anyone who is concerned and would like advice or to just chat it through, then give me a call on 01689 856581. Women need to know that there are safe and effective natural alternatives to HRT.

 MEN’S HEALTH
I recently read in a local newspaper the other day that ‘Young men are seriously risking their health because they are too embarrassed to see a doctor when they are ill. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men, yet has a 96% cure rate if caught early enough.’ Statistics show that cases of testicular cancer have risen by 70% in the past twenty years, and prostate cancer is likely to overtake both lung and breast cancer to become the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK by 2018. More than 150,000 men develop cancer each year in the UK, the main cancers being those of the prostate, lung, skin and bowel.

It is vital that men go the doctor at the first sign of any problem, as prostate cancer can only be cured with early intervention. Treatment, however, carries a 90% risk of impotence and a 20% risk of incontinence.

How Natural Supplementation            Can Improve Prostate Health

The latest research about preventing prostate problems through supplements, herbs, diet and lifestyle is encouraging. It is a good idea for men to become aware of prostate cancer and begin a prevention programme early in life.

Dietary Approaches to a Healthier Prostate

Drinking more water is an excellent practice, as is decreasing caffeine consumption. The typical anti-cancer diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, high fibre, soya products etc., of course applies when protecting the prostate, but other dietary factors also figure prominently. A six-year study at Harvard Medical School evaluated 46 different fruits and vegetables in the diets of more than 47,000 men. It showed that some fruit and vegetables, in particular cooked tomatoes and tomato products such as pasta sauces, tomato juice or soup, contain an antioxidant known as lycopene, which is associated with lowering the risk of prostate and other cancers, and has been shown to reduce prostate cancer in a measurable way. Studies have also shown that saturated animal fats play a significant role in cancers and the prostate. High Levels of omega 3 fish oil fats in the body have been linked to reduced risk of developing prostate cancer, while consuming dairy products may increase the risk of prostate cancer. Men who drink soya milk more than once a day, however, had a 70% reduction in risk in developing the disease. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported that men who consumed four servings of vegetables a day had a reduced risk of 35% compared with those consuming just two servings a day.

MEN’S HEALTH cont’d.
Saw Palmetto is deemed to be one of the most significant herbal treatments for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

A recent review of controlled trials involving nearly 3,000 men with prostate disorders suggests that Saw Palmetto is at least as effective as some pharmaceutical drugs in reducing symptoms and producing fewer side effects.

Vitamin E figures prominently in improving prostate gland health. And this, along with the antioxidant mineral selenium, may help to reduce the possibility of the disease spreading and has been associated with a lower prostate cancer risk. Zinc is also an essential mineral which, as well as having other properties, is important in prostate gland function.

NATURE’S SUNSHINE SUPPLEMENTS FOR MEN

MEN’S FORMULA This combination of saw palmetto extract, pygeum extract, lycopene, stinging nettle extract, gotu kola and zinc provides incredible nutrition and toning for the prostate gland. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant, found naturally in tomatoes.  Stock No: 3112   Price: £19.95 (Monthly USA Order Form only)

VITAMIN E WITH SELENIUM – Vitamin E is the most common vitamin found in nature and is lacking in processed food. This vitamin exists in several forms, the most active being d-alpha tocopherol. The ‘dl-‘ form, however, is synthetic and therefore not very effective, and is not sold by Nature’s Sunshine. Instead, vegetable sources are used which contain other naturally occurring tocopherols to ensure full potency of the entire vitamin E complex. In this product the antioxidants selenium and vitamin E work codependently in the body to help destroy free radicals.             Stock No: 1667   Price: £12.75

ZINC – Zinc is a trace mineral that has been found to be extremely important to overall health, but in particular for prostate function. This product is derived from zinc gluconate for more efficient absorption. It is combined with a rich, natural base of kelp, thyme and alfalfa to optimise its benefits.  Stock No: 1601   Price: £6.02

OMEGA 3 EPA – Sources for these fish oils are the flesh of cold water fish. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid needed for optimum health. This product does not contain fish liver oils.                    Stock No: 1609   Price: £11.63

ANTIOXIDANT ARSENAL – We are bombarded with free radicals every day and if they are not controlled they can damage the body's cells and accelerate the processes of disease and aging. The antioxidants will scavenge for free radicals and neutralise them, preventing them from harming the body. The Antioxidant Arsenal contains Vitamin C, Vitamin E with Selenium, Beta Carotene, Zinc and Grapine. Stock No: 4033    Price: £21.93

TNT – a balance of vitamins, minerals, energy-boosting nutrients and 18 different sources of fibre. TNT provides beta-carotene, lycopene and other carotenoids, which lower the risk of certain diseases. Stock No: 4300   Price: £14.27

CHILDREN’S HEALTH

Information from Public Health Nutrition 1999 reported that children’s diets in the 1950s, when some foods were still rationed, were in fact superior in terms of vitamin, mineral and fibre content compared with those of today. It’s also unfortunately true that 50% of children refuse to eat everything they are given at meal times, and that parents let them get away with it. 59% of all children refuse to eat vegetables. But not only are children consuming more sugar and salt in their diet, they are also becoming less active. One in five children never eats fruit, and half eats no green vegetables. Numerous studies have shown that pre-school children are at risk of iron deficiency, which may lead to anaemia. Many will have calcium intakes, which will most certainly increase bone loss in later life if the correct diet or supplementation does not intervene.

NSP’s Herbasaur range is a totally unique concept in children’s herbal and nutritional supplements. All of the products are free from any artificial colours, flavours, sweeteners, starches or preservatives. The chewable ‘dinotabs’ have a cute dinosaur on one side and are naturally fruit flavoured.

Liquid Multi Vitamins Plus Iron is a daily dietary supplement that provides the important vitamins and minerals needed for proper growth and development.                     Stock No: 3330   Price: £10.15

Chewable Multi Vitamins Plus Iron is the chewable version and contains thirteen essential vitamins and iron.             Stock No: 1622   Price: £8.87

Chewable Bifidophilus For Kids provides children with the correct ‘friendly’ bacteria, essential for intestinal health in children. Good bacteria is easily destroyed by antibiotics and poor diet, and this may lead to an overgrowth of bad bacteria and parasites in the colon.                                                                                Stock No: 3302   Price: £9.95

Chewable Antioxidants With Grapine provides children with antioxidant protection against free radical damage and helps strengthen children’s immune system.                     Stock No: 3301   Price: £12.24

Chewable Elderberry Plus is designed to improve children’s immunity and help relieve upper respiratory infections, including allergies, colds, fever, and flu.             Stock No: 3300   Price: £7.14

Chewable Calcium For Kids is designed to supplement a child’s diet with adequate calcium intake. It also provides the minerals known to assist calcium absorption. Calcium is vital during formative years as bones grow and harden, for building bone density, which occurs during youth and then stops around the age of thirty. It is also necessary for muscle growth, muscle contraction and nerve transmission.           Stock No: 3303   Price: £10.15
