Nature’s Sunshine
 APRIL 2003 Newsletter

Issue  36                                                                                                   April 2003

We have had such a wonderful few weeks with the sun shining and the temperatures about 5 degrees higher than normal. It was actually snowing in Crete last week so we’ve been very fortunate. Everyone has been feeling happier and looking forward to the summer months. I’ve completed my course with Ruby Robinson on how to apply a classic makeup and received my certificate. I’ll be attending the second Skin Care Course on 30 April to obtain that certificate. If you would like to arrange a beauty evening at your home for you and your friends, just contact me and we can arrange a date.

You might want to stock up on your favourite NSP supplements before April 14th. This is when the new price review becomes effective. An increase in contract prices for herbs, bottles, packaging material and other raw materials has resulted in increased manufacturing costs for the company. While some products will not be affected, others will experience a modest price increase of only pence.

I went to Peter Klein’s workshop in March at Addington Palace and he was again so informative. His next visit to Addington palace is on Saturday 31 May.

I’ll be speaking at the next Health Talk at Chelsfield Lakes Golf Club on Thursday 10 April from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. I’ll be covering stress, anxiety and tension, while other speakers will be providing information on how to overcome fatigue, headaches, insomnia, depression, water retention, kidney stones and urinary infections. I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

ADVICE FROM PETER KLEIN (herbalist, naturopath, homeopath)

·        In herbal medicine, sometimes the symptoms get worse initially. e.g. taking SN-X for sinus problems may produce more mucus initially but then this will subside as the body starts to heal.

·        If you have pain in your body, your body is crying for help. Taking painkillers simply masks the symptoms. You need to find the cause of the pain and find the appropriate remedy for you.

·        Alcohol and cigarettes are dangerous drugs, which poison the body. Don’t let anyone smoke in your house. Why should others make you ill? If you have a health problem, the first step is to Detox to rid your body of any unwanted chemicals. St John’s Wort will help you while you try to give up smoking. To control the cravings, try catnip and fennel liquid extract.

OMEGA 3 AND BREAST CANCER

Surely if you are going to eat healthily you don’t need supplementation”, is the usual argument. “

This argument is simply facile and against scientific evidence. For example, you can no longer obtain enough vitamin E from your foods. Stress, anger, depression all have a negative effect on B vitamins, yet some of them like folic acid are crucial in DNA replication. Statistics repeatedly point to a lack of omega 3 in our bodies-yet a lack is implicated in virtually every cancer. Women with high omega 3 levels simply do not get breast cancer. Fact. But you would need a large daily intake of oily fish to achieve a desired level and that would add to unwanted calories. Much fish now has mercury contamination so it is better to supplement using a high quality source of Omega 3.

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)

So many people seem to be suffering from this complaint. I hear it over and over again and for many people it is a chronic condition.

Symptoms of IBS

Abdominal pain                     depression

Anxiety                                 diarrhoea

Bloating                    gas

Constipation              mucus in stools

Cramps                                 nausea

Food and waste material is not moving along the digestive tract in a normal way so mucus and toxins accumulate; gas and stools become trapped, causing bloating and pain, which often worsens with eating and is relieved by a bowel movement.

There are various causes such as food allergies, stress, hormone changes and a low fibre diet.

The most common food allergies are to wheat, dairy, coffee, tea and citrus fruits.

There is also a clear link between stress and IBS.

SUGGESTED SUPPLEMENTS FOR IBS

Intestinal Soothe and Build -stock no 1105 -    Price £7.90

Nutri Calm – stock no 1617 Price £15.30

Aloe Vera Juice – stock no 1680 – Price £12.04

Psyllium Hulls – stock no 545 – Price £6.83

The Intestinal Soothe and Build calms an inflamed intestinal system and builds the cell structure.

Nutri Calm contains the B Vitamins and calmative herbs, which calms and soothes the nervous system.

Aloe Vera Juice is very soothing to both the stomach and the intestines.

Psyllium Hulls swell up to 14 times to absorb toxins from the colon and it is the best fibre to clean the colon.

Try and eliminate wheat, dairy, caffeine and citrus fruits from your diet for a short period. Then add these foods one at a time to test for any allergies. Wheat is a very common allergen for many people and it’s now possible to buy pasta made from rice, corn and other grains. It tastes good and isn’t as heavy as wheat pasta. Even children like it!

THIS AND THAT OF INTEREST

Chocolate cravings indicate a need for amino acids (SynerProtein) and Magnesium.

Craving sweets? Try Chromium GTF or Licorice Root Extract.

Headaches around menstruation can indicate a calcium deficiency.

For infertility try FC with Dong Quai and Vitamin E.

During pregnancy and lactation you’ll need Nature’s Prenatal and SynerProtein.

TINNITUS

Tinnitus is a condition that occurs in about 85% of people with hearing loss. It is experienced as constant or recurring ringing, buzzing or hissing noises not caused by anything in the external environment. It is now thought that the noise originates in the brain and not in the ear, as was previously believed. If the ear is damaged by exposure to loud noises or certain medications (including aspirin) the brain may try to compensate and end up producing electrical signals that a person hears as a ringing noise in the ears.

SUGGESTED SUPPLEMENTS

Mega Chel – a high potency multi vitamin and mineral containing other nutrients to improve circulation. It opens the arteries to the ears and can give long-term improvement.

Stock no 1821 – Price £26.47.
