NATURE’S SUNSHINE HEALTH TALKS

I’ve been to two excellent evening talks organised by Nature’s Sunshine Products (NSP) in the past month. The first talk on 10 February was an evening with Jeff Tuttle, a scientist that has been involved with NSP for 25 years. Jeff spent the first part of the evening explaining how NSP manufacture products you can trust.

Jeff explained that quality control is of the utmost importance to avoid any contaminants in the end product. NSP has the facility to test for pesticides and fumigants to ensure that there is nothing harmful on the harvested herbs. It’s just not possible for any company to check all the farms where the herbs are grown but at least NSP has the equipment to check the end product.

NSP also uses the correct part of the plant. Golden Seal is a good example, as only the root is effective as a herbal remedy whereas some companies use the leaf of the plant. They are still allowed to call it Golden Seal but it won’t have any of the healing properties.

Garlic is another example. The process that removes the odour also removes the active ingredient allicin and so removes the potency. Allicin gives the garlic its anti bacterial properties. NSP coat their High Potency Garlic with chlorophyll. This helps with the digestion of the garlic and chlorophyll is a natural deodoriser for the breath.

NSP also checks the raw ingredients for arsenic, lead and mercury as many Chinese herbs are contaminated. 60% of samples bought from High Street Shops were found to contain microbiological contaminants.

Jeff stressed that at NSP, quality is not just a word but also a commitment. NSP’s quality products have helped change the lives of thousands of people.

Nature’s Sunshine was awarded the Supplement Manufacturer of the Year in 2002 in the Nutritional Outlook Magazine. In the Business Ethics Magazine, Nature’s Sunshine was voted one of the top 100 Best Corporate Companies. No other health supplement company were named in the list so Nature’s Sunshine was very honoured to be included on the list.

I’ve only included a summary of Jeff’s presentation as it lasted 2 hours. It left me in no doubt that Nature’s Sunshine is the true leader in health products providing high quality organic herbal and vitamin supplements that you can trust.

The second evening on 9 March provided information on Natural HRT. NSP has a product called The Natural Changes Pack designed especially for women approaching or actually going through the menopause. It’s very effective and most women feel the benefit within days.

There was also a speaker explaining the benefits of detoxing and why the Chinese Tiao He Cleanse is so effective at cleansing the kidneys, liver, colon and blood. We were also shown pictures of parasites that live in the gut and told how the Chinese Para Cleanse is effective at clearing out these unwanted parasites.

The third speaker covered the Intestinal System, talking about how to alleviate constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

These evenings are very enjoyable with a friendly crowd of people. Entrance is free and refreshments are available. See over the page for dates of the next talks to be held.

Men’s Health

This month I thought it was time to give you men some health advice. This was prompted by my friend, Malcolm, who asked when it was going to be the men’s turn. So Malcolm, here it is.

Prostate

Several problems can occur with the prostate gland, the most common being an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia). An estimated 50% of 50-year-old men and 75% of 70-year-old men suffer from an enlarged prostate. Symptoms include frequent and increased urination (especially at night), lessening of the force of flow and an accompanying burning sensation. If left unchecked, benign prostatic hyperplasia can cause serious problems over time including urinary tract infections, bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones or incontinence.

It’s important to take care of your prostate and to address any problems. Traditional treatments for prostate issues include the surgical removal of all or part of the prostate. While most men experience a relief of symptoms, it may leave them impotent.

So, what can you do?

·         Incorporate a healthy diet filled with lots of fruits and vegetables and low on saturated fats, sugars and processed foods.

·         There are many yoga postures that help to reduce an enlarged prostate. (I have a list of postures if anyone is interested).

·         The prostate gland requires Zinc approximately ten times more than any other organ in the body. Zinc supplementation reduces enlargement of the prostate.

·         A great combination for prostate issues is Nature’s Sunshine Men’s Formula. This formula is considered particularly beneficial for men over 40 or for any men experiencing swelling, pain, difficulty urinating or those that need nutritional support for the prostate.

·        Supplementation with antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E and selenium) such as those found in Defense Maintenance or Super Antioxidant will help to protect these sensitive tissues from oxidative damage.

Heart Health

Heart disease has become the leading cause of death in Europe. Major cardiovascular disorders include angina, heart attack, hardening of the arteries, thrombosis, stroke, high blood pressure, heart failure, embolism and coronary artery disease.

It is important to lead a healthy lifestyle to help reduce your risk of developing a cardiovascular disorder. This includes taking regular exercise, eating a low fat diet, not smoking, managing stress and supplementing your diet.

Mega Chel is a “mega-nutrient” supplement designed to aid the cardiovascular system. It contains a full range of vitamins and minerals together with herbs known to help the circulatory system. It contains no artificial colours, preservatives, starches, sugars or yeast.

Nature’s Sunshine also has specific products to help with high cholesterol, varicose veins, haemorrhoids and high blood pressure.

EXERCISE

We are constantly told about the benefits of regular exercise to keep our hearts healthy and our bones strong. I often see people at the gym - sweating and red faced on the exercise bikes or on the cross trainers.

People who are fit also consider themselves to be healthy but this is not always the case.

When you exercise, your body produces free radicals, which damage the cells of your body. People who go to the gym day after day pumping away on the exercise machines are possibly doing themselves more harm than good.

While moderate exercise is good you also need to protect your cells with antioxidants to reduce the free radical damage to your cells.

·         The Antioxidant Arsenal contains Vitamins A, C, E, the mineral Selenium and a grape seed extract called Grapine. This is a very powerful combination of antioxidants. (Grapine is known as “the cosmetic that you eat” as it protects the collagen in your skin. It also crosses the blood brain barrier to help prevent problems in the brain such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s).

·         The Super Antioxidant is an exclusive formula containing tocotrienols, lycopene, and alpha lipoic acid, in a base of rose hips, milk thistle and turmeric. (Refer to the product guide for full details of how each of these ingredients helps quench the free radicals in different parts of the body).

If you have any back problems I would highly recommend that you join a Pilates or Yoga Class. There is an excellent Pilates class at the Royal Russell School, Coombe Lane, Croydon. Beginners class on Tuesday from 7pm to 8pm. Call Dawn on 07956 313627 for more details.
