HEALTH NEWS

July 2004

I have just received the July issue of the health magazine What Doctors Don’t Tell You. This month the main report was about the War on Cancer. In 1971, Richard Nixon famously declared war on cancer and predicted that medical technology would find a cure for it “within six years”. Sadly, conquering cancer has proved rather difficult and cancer deaths have doubled in the last 30 years. Some cancers have risen alarmingly as, in 1964 there were only 3300 prostate-cancer deaths whereas in 1998 this had risen to 8600. Teenage cancers, too, are on the rise – by more than 1 per cent a year for the last 20 years.

It seems that every week I hear of someone finding out they have cancer. Families are hugely affected as family life becomes disrupted. We all need to be more aware of the possible causes of cancer and to take steps towards prevention, which is far more effective than cure.

I recently heard a lecture by Chris Ashton, director of the Nutritional Cancer Therapy Trust (NCTT). He said that major factors in the cause of cancer are our current food quality and diet along with environmental problems. The levels of nutrients in our food have fallen by 50% and we live in a cancer-inducing environment.

·        50% of the population use mobile telephones, which induce brain cancer.

·        Cars emit exhaust fumes, which are carcinogenic.

·        Aeroplanes produce even more carcinogens.

·        Microwave ovens induce cancer.

Chris explained that cancer starts with malformed cells, which in a healthy body would be eliminated by the immune system. As our immune systems are now less effective, the malformed cells are surviving more and more and turning into cancer.

Since March 2003, 40 people being treated by the NCTT have completely recovered. There are 100 patients at various stages in the therapy and there is no evidence that any of them should fail to recover.

You can contact the NCTT on 01636 612707 to ask for an information pack. Alternatively you may wish to visit the website at www.defeatingcancer.co.uk as there are many patients’ stories of how they have recovered from various types of cancer and are now in full remission.

I have written over the page various ways to boost your immune systems. If you decide to have any operations, then you need to boost your immune system and strengthen your body ready for the operation and also speed up your recovery.

WHY YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM NEEDS BOOSTING

·         Your immune system determines how fast you age.

·         Your immune system fights off viruses and bacteria that cause illness.

·         Your immune system has the power to destroy cancer cells as they are formed.

·         Your immune system empties your body’s dustbin every day, getting rid of dead cells, dead invaders and toxic chemicals.

·         Your immune system offers protection from radiation and chemical pollutants.

·         Left to deteriorate, your immune system could lose control and cause allergy problems or auto-immune diseases like arthritis.

·         With a struggling immune system, you are ill more often, more seriously, and for longer.

·         With a strong immune system, you are almost invincible and should be able to lead a long, healthy and active life.

HOW TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

·         Eat organic fruit and vegetables whenever possible as these contain more essential nutrients.

·         Stay away from sugar and refined carbohydrates such white bread, white pasta, white rice as these rob your body of nutrients.

·         Quit smoking – need I say more!

·         Cut back on daily tea and coffee drinking.

·         Participate in regular exercise to stimulate your immune system.

·         Eat a clove or two of garlic every day.

·         Drink at least six glasses of water, diluted fresh juices, herb and fruit teas every day.

IMMUNE-BOOSTING SUPPLEMENTS

·         A good multivitamin and mineral supplement such as Super Supplemental or Mega-Chel.

·         Vitamin C 1000mg timed release.

·         Antioxidant Arsenal, which contains Vitamins A, C and E and minerals Zinc and Selenium along with the powerful Grapine (pine bark and grape seed extract).

·         Ultimate Echinacea –A liquid extract of the three most popular Echinacea species in a powerful immune system combination.

·         VS-C -A liquid formula of ten herbs creating an unfavourable environment for foreign invaders. I always take a bottle of VS-C on an aeroplane to fight off any viruses.

·         Immune Stimulator – a formula that activates T-cells and natural killer cells.

Other immune system boosters are Elderberry Defence, High Potency Garlic, Pau D’Arco, Super Antioxidant, Trigger Immune and Bifidophilus. There is also a Children’s range of immune boosting products called the Herbasaurs Range.

The new A4 Nature’s Sunshine Product Guide is only £1.50 and it contains information on all the immune system boosters and why supplementation is essential.

DIABETES

When we eat, our bodies break down the carbohydrates, such as those found in bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and cereals and converts them into simple sugars for energy production.

Glucose, a form of simple sugar is the basic fuel the body uses for energy.  In order for our bodies to utilize this sugar however, it must be transported across the cell membrane where it can be used to feed and fuel our cells.  Insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas, stimulates our body’s cells to absorb sugar, thus removing it from the blood stream.

When our bodies cannot properly utilize glucose, causing it to stay in the blood, we are diagnosed as having diabetes. The build-up of sugar in the blood, characterized by diabetes, can cause the cells of our bodies to be starved for glucose and can, if left unchecked, lead to damage of the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.

There are two types of diabetes:  insulin dependent or Type 1 diabetes and non-insulin dependent or Type 2 diabetes.  Type 1 diabetes is when the pancreas cannot make the insulin needed by the body to process glucose.  For individuals with Type 1 diabetes, while natural therapies may help the body to be more receptive to insulin, they require regular injections of insulin to maintain health.

Individuals with Type 2 or Adult-onset diabetes produce varying amounts of insulin but the ability of their body’s cells to absorb sugar is diminished.  There are "classic" warning signs that often, but not always, accompany diabetes, i.e., excessive thirst, excessive hunger, excessive urination, excessive tiredness, and unexplained weight loss.  Individuals who are at a greater risk include people who are:  over age 40, are overweight, have a family history of diabetes, have had diabetes during pregnancy, have high blood pressure or high blood fats, have the stress of an illness or injury, are a member of a high-risk ethnic group such as African-American, Hispanic, American Indian and Asian.  For these individuals, natural therapies tend to work well.

Recommendations For Wellness:

·         Reduce your consumption of starchy foods that are high in carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes, processed cereals and white rice.

·         Avoid salt and white flour products as these produce an elevation of blood sugar.

·         Consume a high fibre, whole foods diet and eliminate processed junk foods from your diet.

·         Start an exercise programme.  In most cases, weight reduction can help those with type 2 diabetes.

·         Dietary fibre, such as Psyllium Hulls or LOCLO has been show to improve glucose tolerance in some studies.

·         Supplement with vitamins C, E and B-Complex and minerals magnesium and zinc. Individuals with diabetes tend to have low levels of these important nutrients in their blood.  In addition, these supplements have been shown to help to reduce damage to the eyes, nerves and kidneys.

·         The supplement, Spirulina, helps to stabilise blood sugar levels.

·         The herb Nopal can help to strengthen the liver and the pancreas thereby improving your body’s ability to utilize insulin.

·         Herbal combinations such as HY-A and P14 can help to normalize blood sugar levels.

·         Incorporate a chromium supplement into your health programme.  Chromium helps improve glucose tolerance by increasing our body’s sensitivity to insulin.
