Issue 23                                                                                                                        July-August 2001

I’ve just returned from an amazing holiday at a yoga centre in Southern Crete. This is the second time I’ve been there and I’m well and truly hooked. We started the day with Tai Chi followed by Astanga Yoga and then a very welcome brunch. There was the option to learn The Alexander Technique and Pilates. We did another session of Tai Chi at 7.30pm followed by dinner at 8.30pm and then Salsa dancing from 9.30pm until 11pm and finally the Taverna.

All the classes are optional but I wanted to try them all. The teachers are of a very high standard and I thoroughly enjoyed every class. I met some very interesting people and made some new friends. I’ve now started doing the Astanga yoga during my lunch break in work and some of my colleagues have decided to join me to learn this amazing form of yoga.

My employer has currently arranged for all employees to have a Health Screening Test. Most people have been advised to exercise on a regular basis. I know that lots of people find exercising very boring but it can be enjoyable. There’s so much on offer these days in Leisure Centres and Fitness Clubs. Doing exercise doesn't just mean going to the gym, you could start by swimming regularly, or try aqua aerobics, or even yoga? You may find that exercise increases your energy levels and gives you a greater sense of well-being

I have decided to issue my newsletter every other month, but don’t forget you can always contact me for information.

Pesticide Cocktail Linked

to Parkinson's Disease

A study in the US has found that a mixture of two commonly used pesticides, paraquat and maneb, found in conventional food creates in mice the exact pattern of brain damage that doctors see in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Professor of Environmental medicine and Dean for Research at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Cory-Slechta, explained that current regulations and determinations of safety levels are usually based on the effect of single chemicals. She said, ‘In the real world, we're exposed to mixtures of chemicals every day...there are dozens of different fungicides related to maneb alone. I don't think we just happened to pick the right chemicals to see such an effect. I think what we have found is the tip of the iceberg’.

Although it is thought unlikely that the pesticides cause the disease on their own, several epidemiological studies have hinted at a role for pesticides in the development of the disease. What we can draw from this is:
a) We don't fully know the risks to our health involved in the mixed use of chemicals in growing our food.

b) The safest way to minimise these risks is to ensure we don't eat food contaminated by pesticides, so eat organic food.
c) Take a good range of antioxidants daily to reduce the risk of free-radical damage from these toxic substances, such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E with Selenium, Zinc, Beta Carotene and Grapine.

There is some evidence that people with Parkinson's disease may be low in the B vitamins so a B-Complex is recommended. The herb Gotu Kola would improve circulation around the brain and also act as a tonic for the brain.

A Focus on…ARTHRITIS

One of the greatest causes of suffering as we get older is aching joints and arthritis. We are led to believe that nothing can be done except take painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. This is completely untrue. There are many proven ways to reduce pain and inflamm-ation without drugs. Many people have food allergies that make their symptoms flare up, the most common being wheat and dairy. Arthritis is an over-acid condition in the body and wheat and dairy are acid-forming food.

The first step is to take Nature's Sunshine Calcium Magnesium formula to alkalinise the body. There are other products that will help such as Glucosamine, known to help rebuild cartilage and alleviate pain within a period from one week to three months.

Nature's Sunshine Glucosamine is a superior product as it contains Glucosamine hydrochloride as opposed to Glucosamine sulphate. It also contains Una de Gato (Cat's Claw), which is a powerful antioxidant and reduces inflammation and swelling.

Nature's Sunshine has another product for arthritis called ART-A, a herbal combination focused on alleviating pain, inflammation and swelling in connective tissues by improving digestion and detoxification. ART-A consists of the herbs Alfalfa, Black Cohosh, Bromelain, Burdock, Capsicum, Catnip, Celery Seed, Horsetail, Hydrangea, Sarsaparilla, Slippery Elm, Valerian, White Willow bark, Yarrow and Yucca. These herbs will purify the blood, stimulate circulation to promote healing, strengthen connective tissues and bones, soothe inflammation, eliminate toxins, relax muscle spasms and fight infection.

A new product on the market is MSM, which is a form of organic sulphur that has been shown to help both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

We mustn't, of course, forget that the Omega 3 fish oil or the Flaxseed oil provides great benefits for anyone with arthritis. These oils are essential for everyone but if you have arthritis you are probably lacking these oils in your diet.

I have many testimonials about the effectiveness of all these products and I have included just two of these for your information.

If anyone would like detailed fact sheets on any of these products or more information about acid-forming and alkaline-forming foods, just give me a call.

TESTIMONIALS

Here are a couple of testimonials on ART-A and Glucosamine. Please keep sending me your letters. Perhaps we could begin a ‘Questions & Answers’ section?

At the age of thirty I was diagnosed as having osteoarthritis at the top of my spine. When I asked what I could do for it my doctor told me that he could only offer painkillers – this I did not want to resort to!

Over the course of the next year my condition deteriorated greatly. On the advice of a friend it was suggested that I take ART-A, Omega 3 fish oils and Calcium Magnesium. Imagine my joy and amazement when, after six weeks I started to gain relief and it just got better and better!

The complete change in my health attracted a lot of interest from my family and friends and now my life has completely changed.

Jackie Nelson, Jersey

For six years I have suffered from severe osteoarthritis and a spinal condition known as ankylosing spondilitis. Having been prescribed dozens of drugs and painkillers I was told by my specialists that I had a 50% chance of ending up in a wheelchair unless I underwent surgery on my back.

Six months ago I discovered Glucosamine, which helps to repair cartilage, and began taking it every day. I am now able to go for long walks and swim, which was previously impossible.
