Issue 22                                                                                                                                     April 2001

Just as I was about to write this Newsletter I looked out of the window and saw a beautiful, blue sky and I immediately started to think about my holidays that are not too far away (11 weeks to go, to be precise!). You may also be thinking about yours – ‘what clothes do I need to buy, have I got enough suntan lotion’ etc, etc. But do you think about your health when you’re on holiday, or the health risks involved in flying?

Protect Yourself in Flight!

Did you know that taking a herb called Butchers Broom could prevent occurrences of deep vein thrombosis on long haul flights? The saponins in the herb lengthen the time it takes for blood to clot and so help with a variety of circulatory problems including thrombosis and varicose veins (and is particularly beneficial for preventing post-operative thrombosis). Peter Klein, the consultant herbalist with Nature's Sunshine, recommends that you take Butchers Broom for two or three weeks before the flight.

It is also very common to contract a cold virus and other infections on a flight due to the circulating air on board.

VS-C is a Chinese herbal combination, which strengthens immunity against bacterial and viral infections, including extremely contagious diseases. VS-C is best taken as a preventive measure for at least three days before a flight. It can also be taken at the first sign of symptoms and throughout illness.

Next month I’ll tell you about the “natural “ holiday first aid kit.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS

When my sister, Judith, was in her twenties and early thirties she suffered with what she now knows was IBS, or to give it its full name, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. At the time, she thought there was nothing she could do to get rid of it, so she just suffered in silence. If you’ve ever had IBS you’ll know that the pain can often be quite excruciating. With Nature’s Sunshine’s help she is now ‘cured’ through taking herbal products and improving her diet with protein and fibre. So many people, especially women, who I speak to these days, suffer with IBS.

IBS is the most common digestive disorder seen by doctors. Twice as many women suffer from the condition as men, and it usually affects people between the ages of twenty-five and forty-five. The symptoms are abdominal pain, constipation and/or diarrhoea (often alternating), bloating, flatulence and nausea. The diseases related to IBS include candida, colon cancer, gallbladder disease, pancreatic insufficiency and ulcers.

So what is IBS?

In IBS the normally rhythmic muscular contractions of the digestive tract become irregular and uncoordinated. This interferes with the normal movement of food and waste material, and leads to the accumulation of mucus and toxins in the intestine. This accumulated material sets up a partial obstruction of the digestive tract, trapping gas and stools, which in turn causes bloating, distension and constipation.

Stress, diet and food allergies certainly play a big part in the cause of IBS. Whether or not an individual with IBS eats normally, malnutrition may result because nutrients often are not absorbed properly. As a result, people with IBS require as much as 30% more protein than normal, as well as an increased intake of minerals which can quickly be depleted by diarrhoea.

Judith got rid of IBS the natural way with Bowel Build which contains 18 ingredients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes and herbs that detoxify, cleanse, support and strengthen the intestinal system, and Slippery Elm which coats and soothes irritated tissues of the membranes, stomach and the intestines. These two products were taken on alternate days so that she was strengthening one day and soothing the next. But now it’s even easier with just one single product – Intestinal Soothe and Build – which does exactly that. You could also think about Nutri Calm if your IBS is stress-related, SynerProtein as your daily intake of good vegetable protein, and TNT which is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and the all-important fibre. All these certainly help to keep  Judith’s IBS symptoms away!

HYPERTENSION

(HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE)

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is generally defined as a blood pressure greater than 140/90. The reading that is considered normal is around 120/80. Any elevation in blood pressure raises your risk for heart attack and stroke. About 50 million Americans have high blood pressure, which is often called the silent killer. I would imagine that a high percentage of Britons also have high blood pressure and possibly don't even know about it as they just don't have it tested.

How can I reduce my blood pressure?

While the condition itself causes no symptoms, it sets the stage for a heart attack or stroke. There is plenty of solid evidence that diet and lifestyle changes, including regular exercise, stress manage-ment and the right nutritional supplements will lower your blood pressure without resorting to drugs. But don't expect the pharma-ceutical industry to encourage the natural way. It would cut into the £1 billion-a-year market for anti-hypertensive medication!

Eating hearty vegetable soups on a regular basis can do more than help normalise blood pressure and prevent heart disease. It can also help prevent cancer, obesity, diabetes and constipation. Make sure you put lots of onion and garlic into any soup together with fresh tomatoes, carrots and celery as these are all known to lower blood pressure.

Vitamins and minerals play significant roles in preventing and even treating high blood pressure. You may also need to think about losing some weight, since being over weight is one of the biggest risk factors for high blood pressure. Eat lots of fatty fish like mackerel and salmon and try to limit your alcohol intake to no more than two drinks a day. Cut down on sugar as studies show that sugar from your sugar bowl and in your food raises blood pressure.

The Mega Chel Programme

Anyone over the age of forty-five may have a build up of plaque in their arteries. There is a way to remove this plaque by the correct use of a product called Mega Chel together with Colloidal Minerals. Always start slowly and taper off as instructed. If you’re serious about wanting to follow the Mega Chel Programme then please give me a call so that I can send you the recommended instructions to help reduce your blood pressure.

You may find that, as the body removes the plaque, the blood cholesterol will temporarily rise, but this is normal and you should continue with the programme.

If you are on a Mega Chel maintenance programme you may wish to add High Potency Garlic and Ginkgo and Hawthorn as Ginkgo has the ability to get into the smallest extremities and can also pass the blood brain barrier.

YOUR LETTERS

Many thanks for your letters and testimonials – keep sending them to me!

I felt I just had to put pen to paper to say how pleased I am with the relief I have gained by taking Slippery Elm and Bowel Build. For many years I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome and I can’t put into words the pain and discomfort I felt, and the effect it had on my life. I became so ill that I just didn’t want to go anywhere firstly because nothing I wore would fit me properly because I was so bloated and, secondly, because I literally felt terrible and socialising was the last thing I felt like doing!

I now have a greater understanding of my problem and feel that I can cope. I no longer have bouts of remaining in the bathroom for hours on end and feel I can live a normal life thanks to Nature’s Sunshine.
