Stop Ageing Now – Part Four

I am still continuing with the theme of how to slow down the ageing process as this is how we achieve good health and prevent degenerative diseases as we grow older. I have included more extracts from Jean Carper’s book, “Stop Ageing Now”. She has extensively researched this subject and her book is based on hundreds of studies by scientists from prestigious institutions who are discovering the incredible truth about the ageing process. Much of the ageing process is not inevitable and what we call “normal ageing” is actually often due to unsuspected deficiencies that can be readily corrected by taking antioxidant vitamins, minerals, herbs and certain food.

In the previous newsletters (parts 1-3) I covered the benefits of taking antioxidants, B vitamins, Ginkgo Biloba, Omega 3 fish oil and why certain fats are so bad for us. If you want copies of any previous newsletters you can either visit my website at www.optimumhealth.co.uk and click on the link for Newsletters or I can send you one by email.

Many women spend a great deal of money on expensive face creams and visiting beauty salons for facials thinking that this will give them a youthful complexion. Face creams are only absorbed into the outer layers of the skin and will help to stop damage from external free radicals if they contain antioxidants such as Vitamin E. It is, of course, important to protect the outer layers of your skin by using a good moisturiser that contains antioxidants and SPF15. Be careful what you buy as many companies use harmful chemicals in their products.

BUT the only way to stop the internal damage to all the layers of the skin, that is ultimately responsible for ageing and blemishes, is to eat your way to a beautiful complexion. Eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and cutting down on dairy, wheat and meat will make a big difference to your skin. Drinking lots of clean water will help keep your skin hydrated. Taking a vitamin E supplement along with other antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Beta Carotene will help improve your skin quality. Taking Omega 3 Fish oil or Flax seed oil will keep your skin soft and supple and alleviate any dry skin problems.

How Coenzyme Q-10 Can Stop Ageing

If you want extra insurance against growing old prematurely, take supplements of CoQ-10, as many researchers do. It helps correct deficiencies that come with age, particularly related to your heart, brain, immune functioning and general resistance to chronic diseases. And it could make you younger and friskier in old age – and we could all do with some of that!

Maybe you’ve never heard of an antioxidant known as CoQ-10 as it’s not exactly a household word. It’s being hailed by scientists as one of the brightest antioxidants around for postponing ageing and preventing or treating age-related diseases, namely heart disease.

Ways To Boost CoQ-10

·          Take Vitamin E – vitamin E may stimulate production of CoQ-10, which is another way both CoQ-10 and vitamin E enhance immunity. In one study, doses of vitamin E boosted CoQ-10 by 30%.

·          Get Enough Selenium – This trace mineral, even in tissues that are not deficient, also boosted biosynthesis of CoQ-10, possibly helping account for selenium’s reputation as a cancer fighter and heart protector.

Nature’s Sunshine has the combined antioxidant supplement Vitamin E with Selenium – stock no 1667.

·          Get Your B Vitamins – To make CoQ-10 your body needs vitamin B6, B12, niacin and folic acid.          B-Complex - stock no 1773.

·        Studies on food show that top sources of CoQ-10 are fatty fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines. Peanuts and spinach are other good sources of this excellent antioxidant.

For anyone over age 50 or so, taking CoQ-10 supplements could reenergise ageing tissues, alleviating the effects of the ageing process and age-related diseases. - Professor Anthony W. Linnane, Centre for Molecular Biology and Medicine, Monash University, Australia.

Do You Need a Supplement?

It’s good antiaging insurance, especially if you are fifty or over. Over 12 million people in Japan take CoQ-10 supplements daily, which is prescribed by their doctors to help prevent and treat cardiovascular disease.

CoQ-10 is manufactured by the body on its own but is depleted by ageing and stress.

Unfortunately, your body’s production of CoQ-10 begins to decline around age twenty, often leaving you seriously deficient by middle age. The cells of aged and diseased hearts show grave deficiencies of CoQ-10.

Most people over 50, and also those with heart disease, cancer, gum disease or obesity have low levels of CoQ-10.

How CoQ-10 Fights Ageing

·        Saves arteries – having lots in your body is critical in keeping arteries unclogged and young.

·        Revives failing hearts – research at the university of Texas, has shown that three quarters of elderly patients with cardiomyopathy improved significantly after taking CoQ-10.

·        Boosts immune functioning – fights ageing by stimulating immunity.

·        Prolongs youth and life – research has shown that the advantages of taking CoQ-10 shows up later in life and extends the life span.

How Much To Take?

30 milligrams a day is a common antiaging dose if you are generally healthy. People with signs of chronic disease need higher doses such as 50 to 150 milligrams. Dr Langsjoen found that 120 milligrams twice a day raised blood CoQ-10 to levels consistent with optimum heart functioning in 80% of heart failure patients.

How Soon Does It Take Effect?

As a general antioxidant, CoQ-10 kicks in almost immediately to protect cells. If you have a severe deficiency, you might have benefits as quickly as a few days. Generally, the improvement in heart patients is gradual, becoming evident in one to three months or maybe longer.

Are There Any Side Effects?

There is no downside to taking CoQ-10 and it is deemed to be one of the safest substances ever tested. Even at very high doses, no significant toxicity has been recorded.

Which Supplement?

Nature’s Sunshine provides CoQ-10 in capsules of either 10 or 30 milligrams together with small amounts of the minerals magnesium, zinc and copper for maximum absorption. The 10mg capsules also contain 2mg of iron.

CoQ-10 – 10mg capsules – Stock no 1796

CoQ-10 – 30mg capsules – Stock no 4034

CoQ-10 is remarkable stuff. People feel so much better after taking it. It makes a dramatic improvement; it’s unthinkable for me to practice medicine without it. – Dr. Peter Langsjoen, cardiologist in Texas.
