Happy New Year

I hope you had an excellent Christmas break and I wish you good health and lots of happiness in 2006.

So did you over-indulge over Christmas? It’s so easy to eat too many chocolates, mince pies and slices of Christmas cake. Then there’s the alcohol with the extra calories. Does all this sound too familiar? It is so nice to socialise over the holiday period but the extra pounds always appear. So, it’s time to shift that extra weight and get back into shape. And also to get healthy which should be the main objective.

There are just so many adverts on television promoting ways to diet. The celebrities are out in force selling their brand new exercise DVD “guaranteed” to shift the pounds. So why is it that every year we are bombarded with different ways to lose weight and get fit and yet by March or April most people have given up. The gym membership taken out in good faith in January is no longer being used and it just seems an impossible task to lose the extra pounds.

The mistake some people make is to go on a crash-diet. This might work in the short-term but in the longer term you’ll put the weight back on – and more! Also cutting out meals during the day doesn’t work, as you need to keep your metabolism stable. The latest TV advert to lose a jeans size by eating two bowls of Special K or Crunchy Nut Cornflakes in place of two meals is positively dangerous. Not only do they contain unacceptable levels of salt and sugar but also they do not contain enough nutrition to satisfy the needs of your body.

These boxed cereals will give your body a sugar rush resulting in more insulin being needed. These foods are high on the Glycaemic Index and if your diet contains too many refined foods you could find yourself becoming diabetic in your forties or fifties. Take heed as I know more and more people who have developed diabetes in their forties and they are unaware that it was caused by poor food choices.

Educate Yourself

You won’t find the answer by listening to TV adverts or buying the latest weight loss video or DVD. We are not taught how to look after our health so maybe it’s time to take responsibility. Last year I recommended a book by Jason Vale ‘Slim 4 Life – Freedom From the Food Trap’. He explains WHY we shouldn’t eat junk food and HOW we can free ourselves from this ‘addiction’. Written from personal experience (Jason was once over 2 stone overweight, badly asthmatic, covered from head to toe with psoriasis, and had ‘all the energy of a comatose dormouse’) he impresses upon you the importance of eating the right foods. It’s definitely not just for people who are overweight either – ‘it’s for anyone who eats food’ – which covers just about everyone!

Have you heard of the ELMM diet? It’s very simple to follow and it works. You just Eat Less and Move More. One important factor in this diet is that you eat lots of fresh vegetables and stay away from processed food. If you eat a healthy diet in sensible amounts, your weight will reduce gradually, you will have more energy and feel so much better. If you have any ailments that just won’t go away it is definitely time to wake up and make changes to your daily food and lifestyle.

Jason’s book is one book I think everyone should read – it might just change your life for the better.

So, what is the best plan of action to get into shape?

The first step is to start a detox programme, as it will help to shift a few pounds and give you more energy. The body stores toxins in fat cells and the body may refuse to let go of the fat until you first release the toxins.

This may sound a bit crazy but some people have tried everything and yet have still failed to lose weight. So we’ve all re-toxed over the holiday period so now it’s time to de-tox.

The accumulation of toxins can overwhelm even the strongest body, resulting in health problems such as allergies, constipation, depression, fatigue, headaches, indigestion, insomnia, lethargy, obesity, parasites, sinus congestion and skin conditions.

Ways to start the detox process

Chinese Tiao He Cleanse

This is a 10-day detox programme specially created to help cleanse the digestive, intestinal and circulatory systems of the body and to prepare them for improved assimilation of nutrients. It combines Chinese and Western herbs known to absorb toxins from the bowel, improve elimination, expel parasites and worms, detoxify the kidneys and liver, purify the blood and cleanse the body of cellular wastes.

Health specialists recommend taking Tiao He Cleanse at least twice a year. Stock no 4000.

Complementary Detox Products

Nature’s Sunshine’s Bifidophilus has 3.5 billion friendly bacteria together with fructo-oligosaccharide and carrot powder in each capsule. Stock no 4100.

Liquid Chlorophyll – provides an excellent source of health promoting nutrients; serves as a whole body cleanser and deodoriser; powerful antioxidant and protects DNA against breakdown. In recent years many health specialists have used chlorophyll as a tonic for the blood as its molecule bears a striking resemblance to the red pigment in human blood. Stock no 1683.

Zambroza – a drink that has helped so many people. This powerful antioxidant drink has helped people to lose weight, alleviate stiff joints, improve eyesight, lift vitality and spirits. At the Nature’s Sunshine health seminars everyone has something positive to say about how it has helped their health problems. Made from berries it tastes good even to children. Stock no 4098.

Bioenergy Foot Detox

This involves putting your feet in a bowl of water into which an electrode is placed. The toxins are drawn out of your organs through the thousands of pores in the soles of your feet. This is the gentlest form of detoxing and requires no self-discipline whatsoever! You will be amazed at what comes out. There are local practitioners but I also have a machine in Crete if you ever visit me!

Aloe Vera – The Health Benefits

Excerpts from a paper written by

Dr Lawrence G. Plaskett B.A. Ph.D., C.Chem

Aloe vera is a succulent prickly plant of the Lily Family which grows in warm, frost-free climates and which has been known for centuries as a potent medicinal plant according to various cultures around the world.

The complaints that Aloe has been shown to address, with varying degrees of scientific backing include:

Acne, dermatitis, abrasions, boils, cuts, hair loss, headaches, high blood pressure, indigestion, nausea, peptic and duodenal ulcers, colic, ulcerative colitis, gum sores, burns, heart disease, diabetes, allergies, viral infections, constipation, dandruff, oedema, chronic fatigue syndrome, genital herpes, gingivitis, haemorrhoids, herpes simplex, insomnia, insect bites, menstrual cramps, irregular periods, radiation burns, rashes, sprains, sunburn, tendonitis, leg ulcers, vaginitis, varicose veins, arthritis, gout, rheumatism, Candida, psoriasis and warts.

How Does Aloe vera work?

·         It stimulates the immune system by activating macrophages, antibodies and T-cells. Resistance to infections is increased whether it is bacterium, virus or fungus.

·         The anti-inflammatory action of Aloe in acute inflammation is one of the best-known actions. It can calm internal inflammation associated with arthritis or rheumatism. Aloe vera gel applied externally to wounds, cuts and abrasions of all kinds increased the rate of healing by 50% or more.

·         The third major action of Aloe tones up the functions of the digestive system. Experiments have shown that after taking Aloe vera juice, digestive enzymes are increased and the bacterial population of the intestines is improved. There is then less putrefaction of food in the intestines and intestinal acidity/alkalinity is improved. There is very good scientific evidence supporting the use of Aloe against ulcers. The anti-inflammatory effect in the intestinal system could help conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome. Also helps alleviate an ‘acid stomach’. Many people use pharmaceutical antacid remedies but in doing so expose themselves to the potentially toxic aluminium they may contain.

·         Aloe has an anti-diabetic effect and in many cases brings the blood glucose down within the normal range.

Any user of Aloe should bear in mind that certain suppliers dilute it with extracts of water and so reducing its effectiveness.

NSP’s Aloe Vera Juice is formulated according to standards set out by the International Aloe Science Council. In fact, NSP’s product actually exceeds their criteria for the highest quality and purity of aloe vera juice.
