CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS Pedometers I occasionally watch a programme called The Diet Doctors, which addresses people’s health problems by changing their diet and their lifestyle. They encourage people to move more by asking them to wear a pedometer. The patients are expected to take 10,000 steps every day, which is the amount required for long-term health and to reduce chronic disease. For successful weight loss, you need to take between 12,000 and 15,000 steps every day. So, I was curious as to how many steps I took every day as I always consider myself to be fairly active. I bought a pedometer and I was astonished to discover that on most days I only take approximately 3,ooo steps. The good thing about wearing a pedometer is that it encourages you to move more. It becomes a bit addictive as I keep checking it throughout the day. If my total is still very low I know I have to make a grand effort to move more. Rebounders If you don’t have the opportunity to take long walks to reach your target number of steps with the pedometer then another way of achieving this is to use a rebounder. This is a mini-trampoline, which you can use for walking or bouncing. It’s not very big and can be stored under the bed or on its side against a wall.
