Christmas Special Edition

It is that time of year again when everyone seems to be rushing around buying Christmas presents, writing Christmas cards and planning Christmas dinners with family or friends. You might be getting stressed just with doing all this or because you haven’t even started and everyone keeps saying ‘less than four weeks to Christmas’. Stress levels increase and you feel agitated, irritable and generally unwell.

There are ways to alleviate this feeling of stress. I always have a bottle of Nutri Calm in the cupboard for those times when I need to feel calmer. It works and it is not addictive. It is a combination of the range of B vitamins together with calmative herbs such as valerian, hops flowers and passionflowers. (Stock no: 1617).

If you do not like swallowing tablets then there is a liquid alternative called Stress-J Extract. You can take this in cold water or make a tea to drink just before bedtime for a good night’s sleep. (Stock no: 3163).

Don’t suffer with your stress as it can cause many illnesses. If you can’t take away the source of the stress, then try taking something to feel better.

Got the Winter Blues?

The cold winter months are upon us and, let’s be honest, most of us are starting to feel lethargic. Even the most energetic among us tend to lack that get-up-and-go. So why do our energy levels drop as winter sets in and what can we do to restore vitality? Production of serotonin, often called the ‘feel good’ hormone, increases in sunlight. So it’s no surprise that the long dark winter evenings may have a profound effect on your mood state. On the other hand, the production of melatonin in the brain increases when it is dark and encourages the body to feel sleepy and lethargic.

We generally don’t eat as much fresh fruit in winter as we do in the summer. In fact, the short dark days and colder weather often lead us to eat more, and the food we reach for is warming, comforting food – packed with excess carbohydrates, calories and sugar. These foods can cause energy levels to drop and allow lethargy to set in. Moreover, lacking in energy generally means we are less inclined to partake in any activity or exercise. It’s a ‘Catch 22’ situation – a lack of activity will enhance the feelings of lethargy that have led us to be inactive in the first place! Staying indoors, having no fresh air or exposure to daylight and doing little or no activity are all sure ways to further depress your energy and vitality levels.

A healthy lifestyle is the key, with nutrition and dietary supplements playing a vital role in giving us back our get-up-and-go.

Ten Top Tips for a New Energised You

  1. Make an effort to get outside, even for just a short time, every day. Fresh air and daylight are natural spirit boosters.

2.       Take regular exercise. The hormones released during physical activity are known to lift mood.

3.       Get plenty of restful sleep. Try going to bed a bit earlier during the winter months.

4.       Eat small regular meals rather than a huge evening meal. Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

5.       Take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement such as Super Supplemental (stock no 1817) or Mega Chel (stock no 1821).

6.       Continue to drink lots of good quality water – our bodies and brain need water all year round.

7.       If you feel a bit down try taking the Mood Elevator (stock no 1878) or St John’s Wort (stock no 655), which has been shown to relieve depression. Do not take St John’s Wort with antidepressant medication.

8.       Low energy levels is also linked to B vitamin deficiencies. Vitamin B Complex (stock no 1773).

9.       Korean Ginseng is used around the world for improving stamina, reducing blood sugar and cholesterol levels and providing an overall sense of better health (stock no 665). It has also been reported to help prevent hair loss and brittleness as it provides a better blood supply to the hair follicles and so more nutrients are available to encourage hair growth.

10.   And think positive! A healthy mental attitude will help to raise your energy levels.

Essential Oils

Everyone loves to be pampered, and that’s where essential oils come in handy. You don’t have to be an expert in aromatherapy in order to use these fantastic oils. Just add a couple of drops to your bath water, or add them to a carrier oil and rub into your skin to enhance relaxation with Lavender or Ylang Ylang. Or give the opposite effect of waking you up with Peppermint or Pink Grapefruit. There is a very informative booklet available from Nature’s Sunshine on the uses of essential oils – and don’t forget, Nature’s Sunshine essential oils are VERY potent and pure so you need very few drops for them to be effective! Aromatherapy Essential Oils Guide £1.00 (stock no 5913)
