Stop Ageing Now – Part Six

This newsletter is the last in the current series of “Stop Ageing Now”. Next month I will start a series of newsletters on how to boost the immune system ready for the winter months, although we don’t want to think about that just yet with the summer not even over.

Throughout this newsletter I will be quoting from Jean Carper’s book “Stop Ageing Now” and Jason Vale’s “The Juice Master, Turbo-Charge your Life in 14 days”. Jason Vale doesn’t mince words. His book “has been designed not simply to give you a kick up the backside on the health, fitness and life front, but to literally send a rocket booster up there!”

Although I firmly believe that a healthy lifestyle is the route to vitality and energy, we all get tempted occasionally by delicious ice creams, bars of chocolate and the local pizzeria. Jason Vale’s book is an excellent reminder and will supply you with the correct motivational, nutritional and fitness information to inspire you to complete the unique and highly effective 14-day programme and to continue with a healthy lifestyle.

So many people are good at the start of a healthy eating programme. We get excited at the prospect of being thinner with more energy and have all the right intentions. Sadly a massive 95% of the time we revert back to our old ways and spend every weekend telling ourselves (and the world) that all will change again on…..Monday.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle isn’t only about losing weight. It’s about giving your body the right nutrients in the form of food and nutritional supplements, which will improve your skin, add body and shine to your hair, increase your energy levels and give you a mental and physical vibrancy you haven’t felt since childhood.  The only side effect is that you will also lose weight (if, of course, you need to).

In the previous newsletters (parts 1-5) I covered the benefits of taking antioxidants (vitamins C and E, Beta carotene and minerals zinc and selenium), B vitamins, Ginkgo Biloba, Omega 3 fish oil or flax seed oil, Co-enzyme Q10, how to protect your skin inside and out, the importance of garlic and how to keep your arteries young. Quote of the Decade

The following short story from Jason Vale’s book should help you change the way you look at your body and what you put into it.

An 87-year-old man was interviewed for a local Irish television station in the 1970s. He had been living on the streets for many years, but despite having no home or job he looked not just OK, but super well and healthy. He was also incredibly happy and explained that living on the street was a lifestyle choice as he loved being a ‘free spirit’. When asked what his secret was he replied, ‘It’s simple. I don’t eat any junk food.’

Now clearly this man didn’t have a chance to cook, but he was incredibly fussy about what he put into his body and made sure he got plenty of good, nutrient-packed food every day. It turned out he would go to the markets at the end of the day and get a couple of bags of fresh fruit, vegetables and nuts. He also got friendly with some restaurant owners who would, every now and then, rustle him up some wholesome cooked food.

When the interviewer asked him why he insisted on never eating junk food, he replied with a sentence that has to be one of the most profound ever aired, and you may need to read it twice, or at least think about it for a few seconds to fully understand it. His exact words were:

“The reason why I don’t eat junk food is because if I don’t look after my body, I’ll have nowhere to live.”

Why You Need Magnesium to Stop Ageing

Chances are great that you don’t get enough magnesium to protect cells against premature ageing. Thus, your heart is apt to give out at an earlier age, you are more apt to have a heart attack, your insulin levels are apt to go awry, your bones are more apt to break and you’re more apt to be plagued by chronic high blood pressure.

Even small shortages of magnesium appear to make a difference in how long you live and how fast you age. If you have suboptimal levels of magnesium you can expect to show the signs of old age earlier – in particular, clogged arteries, heart arrhythmias (irregular heart beats), heart attacks, high blood pressure and insulin resistance possibly leading to diabetes.

How Magnesium Can Fight Ageing

·         Curbs free radicals – cells low in magnesium create more free radicals and subsequent cell damage. Long-term magnesium deficiency also robs the body of vitamin E, which is needed to fight off the free radicals.

·         Saves hearts – magnesium protects the heart in several different ways. It prevents spasms of the coronary arteries and abnormal heart rhythms that are a primary cause of sudden death. It helps deter formation of blood clots that trigger heart attacks and helps ward off rises in blood pressure and strokes.

·         Prevents and reverses diabetes – new evidence is popping up linking diabetes with a deficiency of magnesium. Studies find that most diabetics often have low levels of magnesium in their cells and blood.

·         Keeps bones strong – to maintain bone strength as you age you need magnesium, as well as calcium. The two work together, with vitamin D, to keep bones from deteriorating. Women prone to osteoporosis commonly lack magnesium. The ratio of calcium and magnesium is also important. Too much calcium and too little magnesium makes your blood more apt to clot, possibly leading to strokes and heart attacks.

What about food? You can get lots of magnesium if you eat whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes.  Nuts (unsalted) are one of the richest sources of magnesium – almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, pine nuts, walnuts and pecans. One of the surprises revealed in recent research is that people who eat nuts have less heart disease. This doesn’t mean reaching for the salted peanuts!

Do you need a supplement? Yes, if you don’t regularly eat magnesium-rich foods. A supplement is necessary to retard premature ageing and a daily intake should be about 500 milligrams. Nature’s Sunshine has an excellent Calcium and Magnesium supplement called SKL Formula, which also contains vitamin D, beta-carotene, zinc, copper and boron.

Warning: don’t take magnesium supplements if you have kidney problems or severe heart failure.

The Importance of Chromium

If you’re age twenty or older, chances are nearly 100% you lack chromium and are ageing much faster than you need to.

It’s virtually impossible to get enough chromium from food. You have to eat 3,000 to 4,000 calories a day to get even 50 micrograms. To get the recommended 200 micrograms, you need to eat more than 12,000 calories a day, say the Department of Agriculture experts.

Why You Can’t Age Slowly Without Chromium

The single overriding reason to take chromium is to save yourself from accelerated ageing brought on by too much of the hormone insulin in your blood. It’s an insidious, largely undetected disorder that comes with age, and it can push you into diabetes at the same time it destroys your arteries.

        *************************************************

Everybody needs at least 200 micrograms of chromium a day. Taking chromium can help save you from heart disease, diabetes and possibly cancer. – Dr. Richard A. Anderson, U.S. Department of Agriculture

The Sweet Chromium Robbers

If you eat sugary foods, you need chromium even more. Sugar can destroy what little dietary chromium you take in.

Most alarming is the fact that the ill effects of chromium deficiency are generally mistaken for “normal ageing”. The decline is gradual and subtle. “It usually takes years for signs of chromium deficiency to show up,” says Dr. Richard Anderson. “Chromium levels just gradually go down, and after decades, your cholesterol is going up, your insulin is going up, your HDLs (good cholesterol) are going down and your glucose is going up – and you’re in trouble. Most people think these things just happen because you get older. Actually, they happen because of a diet with too little chromium and too much sugar. And they are preventable”.

The advice is to take chromium to help normalise blood sugar and insulin before they do irreparable damage. It is not a quick fix for everyone, but it is a very inexpensive antiaging insurance policy for virtually all of us.
