Stop Ageing Now – Part Two

In last month’s newsletter I told you about the book called Stop Ageing Now, which explains simply what aging is and what we can do to slow down the process. It is such a big subject that I decided to spread the topic over a few months.

Last month I explained the importance of taking antioxidants in order to neutralise free radicals. I provided you with details of antioxidant supplements produced by a company called Nature’s Sunshine. It’s important to understand that not all supplement companies are the same. Some companies produce synthetic vitamins and minerals, which are very badly absorbed by the body. They also use the cheaper forms of certain minerals and put such low amounts of the vitamins and minerals in their products that they won’t have any effect on your health. It’s important to buy your supplements from a professional company that make sure the vitamins and minerals will be absorbed into the cells of your body and are not filled with bulking agents and fillers such as lactose.  I’ve looked at many supplement companies over the years and I’ve found that Nature’s Sunshine excel in all respects and provide a very comprehensive range of very high quality vitamins, minerals, herbs and phytonutrients.

I’ll start off this month by explaining why you need B vitamins to stop aging. The astonishing antiaging news about the B vitamins is that they can help alleviate worry over your two most serious concerns as you grow old – your heart and your mental faculties. If you’re lacking in one B vitamin, you’re likely to be lacking in others. You need all of them to postpone aging, but three of them (vitamin B12, B6 and folic acid) are most critical because of their antiaging powers.

How Folic Acid Can Fight Aging

Scientists have discovered in recent years that folic acid is one of the brightest new superstars in antiaging research.

‘ Just taking a folic acid supplement of 400 to 1,000 micrograms a day could help save you from a heart attack, cancer and psychiatric disturbances. Don’t take a chance of being deficient’.

Taking B12 as Good Health Insurance

Dr John Lindenbaum, a professor of medicine, said that a B12 deficiency is like a growing cancer. It may start in midlife but not become dangerous until ten, twenty or thirty years later. But why wait for a B12 deficiency to occur? Since it has awful consequences and creeps up without warning, taking supplements of B12 is good insurance that can sharply cut your risk of senility, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Older people with blood B12 levels at the low end of normal often show neurological symptoms including loss of memory. This can be improved when treated with Vitamin B12.

If you don’t get enough B6 you may be more vulnerable to the classic signs of aging – mainly a failing immune system, declining mental status, compromised heart health and various infectious diseases. A vitamin B6 deficiency leads to reduced production of T-cells, T-helper cells and antibodies, all disease-fighting substances of the immune system. After age forty you start running low on B6, mainly because you absorb it less efficiently.

The B vitamins are dependent on each other so it’s always advisable to take a vitamin B-Complex (a supplement that contains the complete range of B vitamins) and not to just take a B vitamin in isolation. You can take an individual B vitamin along with a B-complex, if necessary.

Why You Need Ginkgo to Stop Aging

If you have any kind of circulatory problem or want to avoid one, including fading mental faculties that can come with age, ginkgo is a good choice.

Ginkgo is a very common ornamental tree whose leaf has long been revered for its antiaging effects on the brain. In Germany, where the leaf extract has been rigorously tested, doctors write more than five million prescriptions a year for ginkgo, mainly to arrest and reverse some of the most dreaded symptoms of aging, including deteriorating memory.

“Ginkgo has earned a reputation for improving the quality of life for the elderly in Europe, and should be a part of the plan for anyone who hopes to live to a ripe and healthy old age”. Rob McCaleb, president of the Herb Research Institute in Colorado.

Here’s What Ginkgo May Do, According to Current Research:

  • Improve blood flow through arteries, veins and capillaries
  • Improve failing memory and information processing in the elderly
  • Slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease
  • Reduce leg pain from diminishing blood flow to limbs
  • Inhibit bacterial activity involved in gum disease
  • Relieve vertigo or dizziness
  • Reduce ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Inhibit deteriorating vision due to oxygen deprivation of the retina
  • Improve hearing loss related to reduced blood flow
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Raise good-type HDL cholesterol
  • Inhibit abnormal blood clotting
  • Relieve male impotence by promoting blood flow to the penis
  • Relieve Raynaud’s disease, a circulatory disease resulting in cold hands and feet

It usually takes at least four to six weeks and sometimes longer to see a benefit from ginkgo. In a recent German study, short-term memory improved after six weeks and learning ability after six months.

Ginkgo is considered exceptionally safe among natural drugs. A preventive ginkgo dose of up to 40 to 80 milligrams daily, started in middle age might help preserve youthful brain functioning in old age.

Ginkgo seems particularly good for people who are just beginning to notice declines in mental functions. It might delay such deterioration, postponing or eliminating later institutionalisation, say the experts.

If you receive this newsletter by post or by hand, this will be the last month that you’ll receive it, unless you send me your email address.

I’m moving to Crete in May with a wonderful early retirement package from work. I’ve been working towards this new venture for a few years. I’ve achieved a diploma in Nutritional Therapy and I’ve almost finished the Nutritional Therapy Practitioner’s Course.

I’ve also been training to be a yoga teacher on the Ruth White teachers training course. It’s been hard work but well worth it.

So it’s time for the next phase of my life. We’ve had a house built on the Greek Island of Crete where we plan to teach yoga to all levels of ability. I’ll also have the qualification to help people with any health problems using nutritional therapy.

Our house is just two kilometres from the beach and set in a very quiet village called Kamilari. The perfect place to relax and de-stress with wonderful views of the mountains.

So, don’t delay, send me an email now with the message – Newsletter Request- and I’ll add you to my mailing list. Email: lynne.gully@optimumhealth.co.uk

You can also ask for my advice on any health problems.
